Architecture
Ljubljana is divided into five districts, but two of them and the modern commercial center are important for tourists. These two districts - Krakow and Trnovo - are suburbs that have retained their former character and charm to this day. Some streets and squares and most of the Old Town are reserved for pedestrians and cyclists only. Brzeg and Ljubljana are connected by several bridges for cars and pedestrians.
It is worth starting sightseeing with the Monument to Franz Preshern on his name Square, surrounded by Art Nouveau buildings. The road to the old town leads over three bridges, the main bridge was built in 1842, the other two 100 years later. The Old Town Hall of the late 15th century also stands out in the Old Town.
Monuments
We won't feel the atmosphere of the Old Town until we reach the Old Square, which looks more like a street lined with wooden shop fronts. Castle Hill stretches over the city. Defensive fortifications in this place were built by the Celts. Today's castle was created after the earthquake in 1511. Unfortunately, the renovation work in the castle takes a long time, and many interesting places are still closed. You can enter the Castle Tower and the embankments, which offer beautiful views of the Chapel of St. George with interesting frescoes and the Pentagon Tower, where archaeological exhibitions are held.
In Ljubljana, you should also visit: the National Museum, and it is interesting, among other things, Roman jewelry and glass products, and the most valuable example is the Vaze situla, a Celtic bronze bucket of the sixth century BC; the National Gallery with portraits and landscapes of the 17th and 19th centuries, copies of medieval frescoes, Gothic sculptures and works of Slovene Slovenian Ethnographic Museum with interesting, colorful collections depicting the culture and customs of Slovenes. Lovers of sacred objects should visit St. Nicholas Cathedral. The current building with two twin towers dates back to the early eighteenth century, but it is known that the church stood on this site as early as the twelfth century. The temple, decorated with frescoes by Matevets Langus, resembles a Baroque palace, and this impression is further enhanced by pink marble, white plaster and numerous gildings.
